Primal: DVD-Based Study By Mark Batterson / Multnomah |
This DVD has five video segments that are visually stimulating. Each segment is approximately seven minutes and corresponds with chapters from the book of the same name by the same author. I have not read the book. I wanted to see if the DVD could stand alone as a Bible Study. I cannot say that it does. I can say that it offers a lot to think about. It does not provide enough scripture that I would consider it a Bible Study. It is a concept study and a review our response to what Jesus said is the greatest commandment as recorded in Mark 12:29 - 30 The most important commandment is this: ‘Listen, O Israel! The Lord our God is the one and only Lord. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength.’ This DVD offers an opportunity to discuss and evaluate our responses to how we love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength. Instead of a Bible Study, this is a study of our commitment to Christ.
The DVD offers a document available for printing that includes the questions at the end of each lesson or segment of the DVD. The video is visually interesting and engaging. It is shot around Washington DC and other places. While watching I made notes about key points, interesting thoughts and quotes and at least one statement that was presented as fact when it was really an opinion. But that’s really just my opinion.
Since I haven’t read the book, I don’t know if the DVD enhances the book or not. If you have a small group that does not like to read, the DVD certainly offers enough for a discussion about the topics presented. For people with more Bible knowledge, additional scripture can be added for more of a Bible Study.
I enjoyed the DVD and may read the book sometime in the future – perhaps when I lead the small group next time! – UPDATE: I just read a review of this DVD written by someone else who read the book first. Maybe I’ll skip the book based on that review of the DVD.
I received this DVD for free from WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group for this review.
