I want to make a comment about miracles. I'm reading a book called "The Top 100 Miracles of the Bible" by Pamela McQuade. I'm using it like a devotional - reading a miracle or two a day. The miracles are noted in Biblical order, not ranking them by the least to the best, or most important. Looking at it this way, I'm seeing a lot of miracles that I have only skimmed over in past readings.
Some of the ones I've skimmed or not taken very seriously: 2 Kings 2:8 - Elijah strikes the water with his cloak and the water divides like the Red Sea did for Moses and the Israelites. 2 Kings 2: 13-14 Elisha does the same thing with Elijah's cloak, separates the water. Later an axe head falls in the water then floats so it could be found again - (2 Kings 6: 5-6)
The thing I noticed about all three of these incidents is that there is no fanfare, no fasting, no preparation, no nothing. In all three cases, it was EXPECTED that the activity could bring about the miracle - twice dividing the waters so they could cross and the third - making a heavy metal axe head float so they could find it! They trusted completely that they could walk through the river on dry land and could find the axe head!
What a lesson for me!!! I usually pray with some hesitancy for miracles that I want to happen. I temper it with saying that it may not be in God's will that this or that happen. I don't know if I have EVER just acted like I was positive of any outcome where I needed God's intervention. This goes back to the statement that Jesus made about the disciples being able to do even greater things than He did. (See post: Even Greater Things)
Oh to have that kind of trust and faith!
Dear Jesus, I believe. Help my unbelief! Amen.
