I really like mysteries, who dunnits, and novels of suspense. I haven’t read a lot of Christian novels, but some of the ones I’ve read haven been sappy and tried too hard to demonstrate that they are Christian novels. This book, Judgment Day, is a who-dunnit mystery that is not sappy or that tries too hard to be Christian. The characters are flawed, including the Christian ones. There is a lot of room for differing Christian character traits and diversity in Christian beliefs (i.e. gun control) while not ever becoming sappy and over-written.
There is some predictability to the story but there is enough suspense and guess work to keep the reader involved in the story throughout the book. I enjoyed the time the main character spent in jail. I enjoyed the banter between co-workers. I enjoyed the way the side story seemed to be intertwined with the main plot. The story left me wondering about the future of some of the characters. I like that in a book. To have everything wrapped up neatly seems forced in most books.
The undercurrent of the book helps the reader think about how rumors start, how we receive them, and how we pass judgment on the people involved. It also makes one think of the television programs we watch!
I am not going to give away the ending or any plot twists. I want to say that I enjoyed reading this book and author. I will look for other books by Wanda L. Dyson. I wonder if she has written other books with the same characters. I will have to look for that.
I recommend this good mystery, Christian or not. I guessed at some of the plot early but it became less obvious the more I read.
I received this book free from the publisher through the WaterBrook Multnomah Publishing Group book review bloggers program. I am not bound to write a particularly positive review. I am only bound to write an honest review. I enjoyed this book and am glad I was able to give it a positive review.
