Job 12:14-23 14 What he tears down cannot be rebuilt;
the man he imprisons cannot be released.
the man he imprisons cannot be released.
15 If he holds back the waters, there is drought;
if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.
if he lets them loose, they devastate the land.
16 To him belong strength and victory;
both deceived and deceiver are his.
both deceived and deceiver are his.
17 He leads counselors away stripped
and makes fools of judges.
and makes fools of judges.
18 He takes off the shackles put on by kings
and ties a loincloth around their waist.
and ties a loincloth around their waist.
19 He leads priests away stripped
and overthrows men long established.
and overthrows men long established.
20 He silences the lips of trusted advisers
and takes away the discernment of elders.
and takes away the discernment of elders.
21 He pours contempt on nobles
and disarms the mighty.
and disarms the mighty.
22 He reveals the deep things of darkness
and brings deep shadows into the light.
and brings deep shadows into the light.
23 He makes nations great, and destroys them;
he enlarges nations, and disperses them.
he enlarges nations, and disperses them.
As I read this passage, it occurred to me that it lists those things and people that we cling to. We look for help. We hide in our "fortresses". We go to advisers, elders, nobles, priests. We hope our nation is great, mighty enough to save us.
This passage tells us that God is above that. We use the phrase "straight from the horses mouth" meaning that something is completely true because of its origin. We then can put our trust in whatever it is. But God is above the horse's mouth. God CREATED the horse's mouth. Now THAT is truth. God is where we can find truth and honesty and salvation. God never fails us. We may try to make Him conform to what we want, but he never conforms because He has the whole picture. He has the whole plan. He has ALL the truth. He can tear down, build up, loosen, tie, lead, overthrow, take off, reveal and most of all, enlarge and make. God is where we need to spend our trust. He will never ever fail us......if we only trust.
Oh, Lord God, forgive us when we look elsewhere for safety and truth. Keep us mindful of who You are, unchanging, completely faithful, always loving. We know that You alone are worthy of our trust and praise. Amen.
