Luke 17:11-17 tells the story of ten lepers who were healed. Jesus healed all of them. He said,"Go....." And as they went, they were cleansed. Did He heal them because they went when He told them to? Did He heal them because they obeyed? Did He heal them simply because He was merciful? We don't know. There isn't enough information for that...but there is enough information!
Then one of the healed lepers, a Samaritan, came and fell at Jesus' feet. He praised Jesus. He thanked Jesus. He was overwhelmed with gratitude. This is the attitude we should have when any of our needs are met, when any of our prayers are answered.
Where are the others? Jesus asked that very question. Verse 17 says Jesus asked, "Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? That is all of the story that we have. That's it. There isn't enough information to know what happened with the others....but there is enough information!
Here are my questions. Did the other 9 remain "cleansed".....or did they relapse? Did they ever think that they should have thanked Jesus? After he was healed, did the Samaritan follow Jesus throughout the rest of his ministry? Was he eternally grateful? There isn't enough information to answer these questions...but there is enough information!
That's what we get from the Bible. We get enough information to provoke us to think, to provoke us to ask questions, to provoke us to action, to provoke us to learn more. I love reading and studying the Bible. I want to understand more and more. Sometimes I get frustrated when I don't know the answers to my questions.
God, Your word is amazing. It answers my questions and causes me to ask more. Thank You so much for the opportunity to read and own Bibles. I lift up those places in the world where Your word is prohibited and just owning a Bible is punishable by death. I lift up missionaries and groups who provide copies of the Bible to these people. Please protect their mission and give them courage and perseverance. Amen.
