I've been out of it for a couple of weeks. Vacation. Starting a new job. I've seen very little news. I haven't spent much time on the internet or reading my emails. I haven't talked to very many friends or family. This morning I opened my email settings to add some names to the SPAM list (you know the one where you can add emails so you don't receive anything else from that address). My account uses Yahoo so I get a scrolling list of "news items". I looked at a couple of those news items and found God.
One is about a a 23 year old professional football player who has abruptly stated he's leaving his professional football career. He's given very little explanation for his abrupt and mysterious departure from a lucrative career. One report says he may be heading for the ministry! What a nice thing to report! What a wonderful testimony! What courage and obedience! God is in the middle of THAT!!!
Then there is the story of another NFL player who'd killed someone while driving drunk. He didn't try to fight the charges. He told his lawyers to accept a plea deal for a felony (and time in jail) so that the victim's family wouldn't have to sit through a trial. Anytime someone does the right thing, God is there.
Another was a story about a retired golfer playing in a charity event and sinking an amazing 100-ft putt. I always think of charity events as being something in God's hand. In another professional golfer story, a fan was hit by a ball. The golfer signed a golf glove saying "sorry" then his signature and personally handing it to the fan. That seems like a generous thing. This guy's signature on his glove is probably worth some money to collectors. God is there.
I know this post isn't my typical post. But after a week of driving an hour to and from work each day for on the job training, where the people I'm working with are calloused by their jobs and many of the people they deal with may be taking advantage of the system, glimpses of God are very much appreciated, especially where God is touching people directly. The work I did this past week helped some people who feel overwhelmed by their circumstances and the system. They are people who need to feel God's touch. Unfortunately, it is a governmental position to I'll have to be careful how I present God but it will allow me to provide some of God's love and support. I hope that I don't become calloused and harsh. It would be easy to do. I hope that I am able to see God in a lot of unexpected places and faces. I also hope that I am able to reflect God's love to those around me.
God, thank You so much for the reminders of Your goodness all around. Thank You for opportunity to reflect You to others. Help me so that I don't become harsh and calloused. Amen.
