Zephaniah 1:12 At that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps
and punish those who are complacent,
who are like wine left on its dregs,
who think, 'The LORD will do nothing,
either good or bad.'
How many people can you say are complacent? How many of them say they follow Jesus? That they believe in God? I know plenty. I can count myself in that number sometimes too. Not that I think the Lord will do nothing but that .... well I guess I don't care if He does or not. Boy, that sounds awful, doesn't it? I have to say that because there are situations that I don't pay attention to. I don't pray about. They don't affect me so I .....am complacent. If called to act, if a friend asks for prayer or for action, I may be likely to respond, but perhaps only at that point in time. I may not add the concern or issue to my prayer list, to pray about repeatedly. I wonder in what other ways am I complacent. I'll have to pursue that thought some more.
If you look at the verse, complacency is acting or thinking that God will do nothing. He won't save and He won't punish. That kind of thinking is calling God a liar. The Bible is full of promises of God's judgment - some filled and some yet to be filled. The Bible and my life are full of promises of good things from God - mercy, grace, peace, fellowship, etc. I don't think I am ever that kind of complacent....but I know people who act like they don't believe God will act, or that God exists even. I'd say that is complacency that kills, or could get one killed - for eternity. How dreadful.
God, push me from complacency for those things that I need to be more active. I know you do not call me to be active in every injustice or inequity. But I may be complacent where you call me into action. Help me to reject complacency about You in my life. In Jesus' name. Amen.
