Isaiah 40:12-14 (NIV)
12 Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand,
or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?
Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket,
or weighed the mountains on the scales
and the hills in a balance?
or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?
Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket,
or weighed the mountains on the scales
and the hills in a balance?
13 Who has understood the mind of the LORD,
or instructed him as his counselor?
or instructed him as his counselor?
14 Whom did the LORD consult to enlighten him,
and who taught him the right way?
Who was it that taught him knowledge
or showed him the path of understanding?
and who taught him the right way?
Who was it that taught him knowledge
or showed him the path of understanding?
The He or Him in the above verses refers to God. This passage should put us in our places. After all, who else is able to hold all the earth's waters in the PALM OF HIS HAND? Who can begin to measure the breadth of the heavens. Mathematicians keep trying. They have lots of mathematical equations to explain it. But the heavens keep expanding. Only God knows the size and the ultimate size. Who is big enough to weigh a mountain or put all the dirt of the planet in a basket?
I don't think we even try to understand that God is bigger than we can begin to imagine. When my sons were little, I'd tell them that God can do anything. To test me they'd ask a bunch of questions that they thought were impossible, even for God. One question I remember was, "can God make an elephant come out of that mailbox?" My answer was, "I'm not sure why He'd want to but yes, if God wanted an elephant to come out of that mailbox, an elephant would come out of that mailbox." Of course, with my limited idea of things - which I did not share with them - I figured there might be a stuffed animal or a picture of an elephant going through the mail to end up in that mailbox. But why did I feel the need in my head to make Him smaller?

God is so big that he can hold all the waters of the earth in his hand! Not his handS but his hand, one hand. That is a big God. He can weigh the mountains, put all the dust on earth in a basket (which I guess he'd have to create since we are too small!). He already knows everything so we can't teach Him anything. We can't add any value to who God is. God is already complete.
I have to admit that statement bugs me. I enjoy learning new things. Isn't that something that God would like too? If He already knows everything, what keeps his mind occupied and stimulated? Well, that is something I can't answer. I'm sure He is stimulated. Perhaps He is creating more stuff!
What I find amazing is that as big and great as God is, He still spends time with us individually, still sees our individual needs and meets them, still cares about you......and me.....and her.....and him and everyone else.
Psalm 8:4 "what is man that you are mindful of him....?" Isn't that the truth? Why do You, God, even care? I suppose we don't need an answer to that. We just need to know that He does care, that He is mindful. And THANK GOD THAT HE IS! Amen.
