1 Timothy 6:6 (ESV) Now there is great gain in godliness with contentment,
Ah, to be content with what we have. I know that I miss today's joys when I wish for things to come, or wish I had this or that, or wish I didn't have this, or hope for future events and plans. I know what joy I'm missing. But I never thought of missing out on gains in godliness. Paul tells Timothy that there is gain in godliness when he is content.
I wonder if some gain is made in patience as one sits in contentment - instead of fretting about the future. I looked up godliness. My Bible dictionary says it is a spontaneous virtue that comes from the indwelling Christ. So I'm wondering if the fruits of the spirit (Galations 5:22-23) are parts of godliness. (love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control) If these are developing in me, perhaps I am gaining godliness. And if I am gaining godliness, maybe I'm also gaining in contentment. Does contentment come as a result of being patient, self-controlled and faithful? If so, as the fruit of the spirit is developed and increased in me, contentment should also increase. I should be more and more content with where I am today and what I have today.
One needs to be careful not to be content with the world though. We should not be content with poverty, injustice, discrimination, condemnation, etc. As we are each called, we should work to correct these ungodly conditions, not for our sake but for God's sake. To call others to the godliness of Christ, to reflect Christ's godliness to those around us.
Let's be content and gain in godliness, for God's sake, as a reflection of His love, grace and mercy. Let's strive to live in this moment, watching in this instant for God, being content in His presence. After all, He is here, right now, in this very second, and the next and the next. What is there to NOT be content about?
Heavenly Father, Thank you for Your presence. Help me grow more and more content with what You have bestowed upon me. Help me to live and love in this instant in the midst of Your presence. Amen.
