Ephesians 6: 11-18 The Armor of God
Verse 14 is: Stand firm then, .......... with the breastplate of righteousness in place,
The breastplate of righteousness is doing what is right. That is a lot easier said than done. And to be perfectly honest, I think doing what is right changes over time. I don't mean that God's definition of right and wrong changes. I mean that the more I learn about the Bible and the closer my relationship gets with Christ, the more I learn about what right and wrong are. I believe a lot more things are wrong that I used to. They were always wrong. I just didn't know it or I chose to ignore it.
For example, there was a time when receiving too much change back was considered good luck, or not my problem, or even a gift from God. But as I have grown in my Walk, I have come to KNOW that receiving then keeping that excess change is wrong and the same as stealing. Now, if you aren't there yet, that is ok. I am not judging you. I am simply saying that it would not be right for me to keep it. For me, in my current relationship with Jesus, it would be a sin for me to knowingly keep that excess change.
Putting on the Breastplate of righteousness each day means that we will intentionally do what is right. We will intentionally not lead others astray. We will intentionally be as good an example of Christ as we can be.
As I was looking for an image of a breastplate for this post, I found images of Aaron's priestly garb. Aaron was chosen by God to be the High Priest who was permitted to go into the Most Holy Place in the tabernacle. (See Exodus 28:1-30) The purpose of that breastplate was for honor and dignity (vs 2). The breastplate was for making decisions (vs 15). It was also a "continuing memorial before the Lord" (vs 29).
Can we use Aaron's breastplate as part of our "putting on the armor of God"? I think so. We are to do what is right. We are to do what is right while honoring and dignifying God. We are to be constantly calling on God to make righteous decisions as a memorial to God. Our actions should honor God and cause others to think of God. (Isn't that what a memorial does? Make us think of or reflect on the event, person, etc?)
In battle, the breastplate protected the wearer from attack. This is another use for us. We must wear the breastplate to protect us from attacks that come because of our relationship with Christ. (The enemy does not like our relationship with Christ.)
Jesus, thank you for being the example of how to wear the breastplate of righteousness. I pray that I bring you honor as I try to wear it daily. Amen.
