Stumbling block by Rosemarie Kusserow |
1 Cor 8:9 Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.
We have an obligation and responsibility to live as though we really believe we are God's redeemed children. Part of that responsibility is exercising our freedoms with recognition that others are watching and listening. We need not worry about those who are non-believers because we can't please everyone.
The argument is spelled out by Paul in 1 Corinthians 8. He acknowledges that some things are not wrong in themselves. But since we follow and are committed to Jesus, we should refrain from doing those things that other believers find un-Christ-like or unworthy. We, by our actions and words, must represent Christ as He would want to be represented.
We have an obligation to other believers. The passage supports this. Note that the passage says "to the weak". Paul is not suggesting that we have to please everyone or that we have the same responsibility to everyone. In the Corinthians passage, it is clear that Paul's comments are for those situations where there are new believers or those who are not mature in the faith. We should not do anything that will cause another believer to stumble. We are to build up other believers not cause them to fall away.
Holy Spirit, give me a heart of awareness that others are watching and listening so that I don't do anything that will harm or test another person's relationship with You. Amen
