Last evening we started a study for Lent. It has the statement "a lenten study for adults" on the cover. The study is called Watching the Disciples: Learning from Their Mistakes. Several people couldn't make it because of the road conditions. We had good discussion anyway. The study guide has some references to scripture and some things to ponder then some discussion questions.
Interestingly, the first question we discussed was not in the study guide. What is Lent? You see most of us in this study group are Protestants. Possibly because we are protestants, we question things that are somewhat ritualistic. Most of us in the group commented that we didn't grow up with giving up things for Lent, didn't grow up with a lot of discussion of Lent. I don't even know if we (my church) had Ash Wednesday services. We probably did but it wasn't something that we (my family or church family) attended with any regularity or in large numbers.
So asking how Lent or something called Lenten Season got started was not a ridiculous question for us to ask. A couple of us decided to report back next week.
The reason I think it is acceptable and even necessary to question things is so that we understand the difference from what is Biblical and what is "man-made". Not that man-made is bad. Sometimes man-made rituals help us understand the Biblical stuff. But it is very important for us to know the origins of rituals, both man-made and Biblical.
This is the first question, why are we doing a Lenten Study - or what is Lent and why observe it? I'll post things from the study as they come up. Hopefully I'll learn something that brings me closer to Christ - because that is the point of Bible Study anyway.....becoming closer to Christ and being more obedient.
