I'm not feeling well today. I have a stuffy head. My nose is stopped up but running at the same time. I've pumped myself full of medicines to try to alleviate the symptoms so I probably have "medicine head" too but there is too much gunk in there to know. Needless to say, I'm having trouble thinking.
But, I made a commitment to myself to do a post to my blog every day. The reason for this is that if I make the commitment, I will make a real effort to do it. Effort will make me focus on something more than myself. Today, I need the commitment to something besides me.
Which makes me think of what a commitment is. In the case of this blog, the commitment is to spend time looking at ways God works in and through me each day. Ok. Today, I don't feel well. How is God working in or through me today in my not-wellness? How is God being glorified while I'm feeling poorly? To be perfectly honest, I don't know. I do know that because of this blog, I am intentionally looking for His Glory. That is important. Looking for God and His glory intentionally causes me to focus on God and not on my stuffy nose, if only for a few minutes.
Outside of my current circumstances, commitments cause us to act. We have people at church who won't sign a pledge card saying how much they will pledge (or commit) to pay in support of the church and its ministries. I used to be that way, until I decided that making the pledge made me more intentional about my giving. Because of the pledge card, I didn't not give when I was upset at something that has happened, or when I don't attend, or any number of other reason I could come up with for not giving. Now I am intentional about giving. I made a commitment or pledge. It is amazing what commitment does for keeping me on track. What commitments do you need to make so you will be intentional about completing something?
