I'm reading my Daily Bible. It is the Bible in chronological order in 365 daily readings. Now I am to the section on the Laws of Moses. I like the way this particular Bible puts them together in some organized format, meaning for example that all the laws having to do with blasphemy are together (Deut 5:11, Ex 22:58a, Lev 24:10 - 16, 23). I'm guessing that the rest of the "big ten" as I call the 10 commandments will put together like this. This format gives a more complete picture of each of the commandments.
One that I want to think about now has to do with the commandment that we hear repeated as "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain...." This is the King James Version which I think in this case is not explicit enough. The New International Version says, "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name." Deut 5:11 has the commandment. Exodus repeats it. Leviticus illustrates what the penalty was. (click the link)
The term misuse makes it more difficult to adhere to. I hear people say that this commandment is against using God's name with a curse word (you know what it is). That is true, but is only part of how His name can be misused! Think of all the times you say God or Jesus when you are not talking to Him or about Him. Those could be times when you are misusing the name of the LORD your God. I know I have misused it and I don't ever say God's name in conjunction with curse words. What about the times when something is just hard to believe? What about times when I am excited? Yes, it is possible that I am in awe and am acknowledging God and His good works but it is equally possible that I am just exclaiming the first thing that comes out of my mouth.
God is so awesome and wonderful that we should be more respectful of Him, His Name, and His Reputation than we are of absolutely anything else. We should say His name with reverence. We should be mindful of Who He Is each time we utter his name.
My Dear Wonderful God and Lord, Please forgive my utter disregard for You each time I misuse Your name. Rebuke me when it happens. Teach me Your ways. Amen.

Each and Every time we utter His name. Amen!!
ReplyDeleteReminds me of a time when the barn fell and 2 of the kids was inside of it. "Oh God, Oh God" was all I could say. But I was speaking to God, praying, pleading but nothing else would come out. But the Holy Spirit spoke to God on my behalf. And then I think of times when I said "O God" without actually thinking or directing it to God. Forgive me Father for disrespecting you and your precious name. Thank you for using others, the Internet and blogging to reach me. You are amazing Lord. Amen DE
