I wrote a post a couple of weeks ago called Jesus and the Holy Spirit. Someone read it and made a comment that included a link to a 2-hour video called The Human Jesus. I did watch the video over time. I couldn't devote 2 continuous hours of sitting at my computer to watch but I did watch it. From the wording of the comment the commentator wanted to change my mind about the Trinity. The comment said "prayerfully it will aid you to reconsider 'The Trinity'".
Well, it worked. I did reconsider and am reconsidering The Trinity. I can't say that my mind has been changed but it has been opened up. There are a lot of things that we take for granted as fact without actually looking into them ourselves. What the church teaches is full of those things that we take as fact. The Trinity is certainly one of those. Preachers preach about it from the pulpits. It is part of Bible study materials. The book 52 Words Every Christian Should Know is an example. We looked at this book as a Bible Study. Fascinating material. Interesting thing is, when I got to the word trinity, I didn't notice that that word is not in the Bible anywhere. There are references (i.e. Matthew 28:19) that could lead one to develop the concept (which may be how the word Trinity was created!)
Here is my perspective on things like this. I rarely take things at face value - once I am drawn to think about it. I think that God is so immense, and great, and creative, and imaginative, and all-knowing, that if He is a single being, without parts, then fine. He is so immense, and great, and creative, and imaginative, and all-knowing that he can be many parts and be one at the same time - fine. I don't feel like He has invited me to "take a stand" one way or the other.
I do feel like He has invited me to take a stand against stubbornness and pride. Anytime someone (or something like a church/denomination) wants to push their agenda just for the sake of pushing their agenda, I have a problem with it. God is too big for us to think that we have the answers or explanations to all of life's questions. It goes back to my problem with the "creation versus evolution". God is big enough to do it either way He wants or a combination of both ways at the same time.
Unless God compels you to be inflexible about a belief, isn't it possible that you are putting God in a box, limiting who He is, by your inflexibility? Creation versus Evolution......isn't God capable of putting dinosaur bones around the world to throw people off, or rather allow Satan to do that? ......isn't it also possible that God, who is not bound by time constraints, created everything exactly as written in the Bible - but not exactly the way that you read the text? I just don't understand the need for these questions to be either/or issues where someone is right and someone is wrong. (that sounds like pride to me!)
So for the Trinity...As long as the people in the video are not trying to discount Jesus as the Son of God, dying humbly on a cross for my sins, and as long as they are not saying that the Holy Spirit isn't present and working in my life on God's behalf. I don't have to believe that the three are the same. On the other hand, when I get to heaven and find that they are the same being/entity, that won't surprise me either. See, My God is God. He is not my idea. He is who He is. He was who He Was and will always be who He will always be, no matter what my idea of Him is. I try continually to tear down the walls of the box I try to put Him in. (That's part of the reason I liked the novel The Shack.)
Before there is a comment about worshiping more than one God, my response is this from Philippians 2:9-11 "Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father." I confess that Jesus Christ is Lord!
I have to be careful in my life to examine my beliefs in the context of what God reveals to me. After all, it is about my relationship with God and His workings in and through my life. He will instruct me what is important. And He will instruct you on what if important for your life - for your relationship with Him.
Dear Lord, Open my eyes that I may see, Glimpses of truth thou has for me. Use others to break down the box I have around you. Thank you for caring enough to continually work on me. Amen
PS: Thanks to TheAofDNA for your kind comment! I appreciate it! I love your website too. I'll have to spend some time there.

No, thank you! :)
ReplyDeleteand I'm glad you like our website.
Also, I was confronted with this very same issue about the trinity and I must say that I feel the same way.
For a bit I was truly confused about what I think about God, putting him inside a box while putting myself outside of the box trying to open the box to find another small box. haha.
My journey is to discover God's truth through his guidance in reading his word. Others thoughts and churches my have their own interpretations, yet, what is essential for me is to seek it myself, read it myself, and keep my relationship with him strong.
God has no limitations, therefore my heart should be open without constraint.
Dear Lord, I, like Sherri also thank you for caring enough to continually work on me. Thank you for allowing Sherri's words help me to keep you out of the box. Amen
Thanks Sherri,
ReplyDeletefor taking the time to watch the video.

reconsidering the trinity.
